Kyiv: DW bureau damaged in Russian attacks

Last night’s extensive attacks on Kyiv also affected DW: the shock waves damaged windows and ceilings of the DW bureau. DW journalists were not harmed.

Mykola Berdnyk, Head of the DW bureau in Kyiv: "Fortunately, no one was in the office during the attack. Despite the difficult night, our colleagues in Kyiv showed up for their regular shifts in the newsroom this morning. Even though Kyiv is increasingly exposed to Russian aerial attacks, the motivation of DW journalists on the ground remains undiminished. They know that their work is more important than ever, especially in times like these."

DW Director General Barbara Massing: "I am very grateful that no DW colleagues were harmed in the attack. The news this morning came as a shock and once again highlights the conditions under which journalists are working to report on what is happening in Ukraine. They expose themselves to unimaginable dangers every day and will continue to do so to ensure that people in Ukraine, Russia and around the world can access independent information about the war in Ukraine. For this courage and their professionalism, I offer my highest praise – and deep gratitude – to our team and our colleagues in Ukraine."

In total, during this nighttime bombardment—one of the heaviest on Kyiv since the start of Russia’s large-scale war of aggression in 2022—the Russian army deployed 90 cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, as well as 600 drones, against Ukraine. Mayor Vitali Klitschko has so far confirmed two deaths and several dozen injuries. In addition to the DW office in Kyiv, the ARD studio premises were heavily damaged and partly destroyed.
