Editor-in-Chief's Council

DW Editor-in-Chief Manuela Kasper-Claridge appointed five journalists to the editorial council: Erkan Arikan, Sandra Petersmann, Chiponda Chimbelu, Kristin Zeier and Jaafar Abdul Karim.

Five DW journalists with multiple backgrounds and journalistic experiences make up the Editor-in-Chief's Council, which is set up to allow a continuous exchange about content and quality and to make sure DW's journalism is inclusive, open and transparent.

Erkan Arikan, Turkish

Erkan Arikan studied law, communication, social and political sciences in Berlin. From 1999 to 2003 he worked as an editor and presenter at news channel n-tv before moving to Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne where he was responsible for the Turkish language service of the international and intercultural radio channel Cosmo, formerly Funkhaus Europa. Since November 2018, Arikan has been head of the Turkish editorial department at Deutsche Welle. He was instrumental in the launch of the successful YouTube format +90 and news service DW Haber.

Sandra Petersmann

Sandra Petersmann joined DW as a trainee in 1999 after completing her studies in political science and history in Hanover (Germany) and Johannesburg (South Africa). Following the traineeship, she focused on hostile environment reporting. Most of her travels took her to African and Asian countries with a main focus on Afghanistan. In 2012, Petersmann moved to India for five years to join the South Asia bureau of national public broadcaster ARD. Today she heads DW's Research & Investigation unit.

Chiponda Chimbelu, Business

Chiponda Chimbelu grew up in Zambia. He studied English Literature at Western Illinois University and Translation Studies at the University of Manchester. He joined DW in 2009 as an intern before starting a journalistic traineeship in 2011. Chimbelu presented and produced DW's weekly science and technology radio show, Spectrum. Today, he works mainly with the business desk. He produces a news show and reports on how Europe's and China's foreign policies affect African countries, in addition to diversity and inclusion in Germany.

Kristin Zeier

Kristin Zeier, Content Pool

Kristin Zeier heads DW’s Channel Management team and is responsible for the German and English news homepages. Born in the U.S., Zeier has worked for DW for nearly 20 years, much of that time in digital media. She remains a strong advocate for embracing the opportunities of the shifting media landscape, moving across jobs in radio to social media, TV and videos. Zeier is looking forward to further developing DW’s digital home address as a provider of high-quality and attractive content for younger international audiences. 

Jaafar Abdul Karim

Jaafar Abdul Karim, Middle East

Jaafar Abdul Karim is an award-winning journalist and since July 2019 has been the host of the interactive personalized talk show JaafarTalk. In 2016, he was named "Reporter of the Year" by the magazine Medium. In addition to his work as a presenter, Abdul Karim is also a columnist for Zeit Online and has a VLog on Spiegel Online. As a multilingual expert, he is a sought-after interview partner in Germany and other countries. Until June 2019 Abdul Karim hosted the youth show Shababtalk and reached an audience of millions in the Arab world every week. Shababtalk was awarded the title "Best Arabic Talk Show" by the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) three consecutive years. Born in Liberia and raised in Switzerland and Lebanon, Abdul Karim studied in Germany, France and Great Britain.
