Diversity is part of our culture: Encouraging and fostering diversity in cultural work

hosted by Goethe-Institut

A society rich in diversity that successfully integrates different identities – how can we make that happen? The project space “Goethe-Institut Damascus in Exile” is an example of how cultural work can consider diversity in various cultural scenes. After having to close the Goethe-Institut Damascus in 2012 for security reasons, the Goethe-Institut created a temporary alternative, a symbolic place for cultural encounters in Berlin. Various audiences engaged in dialogue, took part in many collaborative actions, and, in so doing, transformed and extended the project space.

The panel opens a discussion on how cultural projects are able to encourage social diversity and identity. To what extent can art and culture make a difference in fragile societies or transition situations? What approaches do cultural experts recommend in diversity policies?

Speakers:

Ulrike Gasser - Head of Programme Department, Goethe-Institut Ankara, Turkey

Gernot Wolfram - Publicist and Professor of Cultural and Media Management, Macromedia Hochschule Berlin, Germany

Halah Al-Hayik - Member, Moving Network, Syria/Germany
