How to make it in the (digital) world: DW hosts panel at NXT.NOW virtual event

DW's Africa youth format The 77 Percent will host a digital session at the NXT.NOW event on November 18 with high-level guests from West and Southern Africa.

How can African journalists shape the image of their continent? The 77 Percent discussed at the Global Media Forum in 2019.

AfricaNXT, an organisation that creates spaces for those passionate about Africa to connect, is hosting a three-day virtual gathering from November 17 to 19. The event brings together academics, activists, entrepreneurs, creatives and the general public. Through conversations, digital exhibitions and immersive programming, the event dubbed NXT.NOW will provide a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration and solution-orientated discussions on how to co-create a prosperous future for all Africans. DW is a lead sponsor of the event.

As part of the event, DW's show The 77 Percent will host a virtual Street Debate on Wednesday, November 18 at 3.20 p.m. (GMT).

The session titled 'The future is bright – how to make it in the (digital) world' will discuss topics like African markets, entrepreneurship and social justice. It will be hosted by DW presenter Edith Kimani, who was recently named one of 100 most influential young Africans 2020.

The guests are: Award-winning software developer and founder Raindolf Owusu, South African actress and wellness aficionado Tidimalo Jasmine Sehlako, and the founder and chief strategist at The Alpha Reach JJ Omojuwa. The speakers who represent different career paths will share their experiences and participants will have the chance to join the debate just like in a real life Street Debate – a popular concept used in The 77 Percent show.

Claus Stäcker, DW Head of Programs for Africa: "We're proud to host this event as The 77 Percent promotes the idea of a generational upheaval. The Africa of tomorrow can only be successful, stable and dynamic if the young generation is empowered and enabled to realize their ideas."

The 77 Percent is a TV magazine for Africa's youth. It derives its name from the percentage of Africans who are younger than 35 years: 77 percent. Despite forming the majority of the population, they are the least represented demographic. With personal stories and lively discussions directly from the continent, the show provides a platform for these voices, highlighting the issues that matter the most.

"After partnering with AfricaNXT for three years on various physical events, its only fitting that we collaborate again on this virtual event for young Africans. The topic of the session is especially timely as young people are finding more opportunities to make it in this ever evolving digital world," adds Sevan Ibrahim-Sauer, DW Head of Distribution Africa.
