If search for identity is the question, is radicalization the answer?

hosted by Center for International Security and Governance (CISG) and International Institute for Religious Freedom (IIRF)

What the media can and should do before or after radicalization

Increasing radicalization is often referred to as a global threat by politicians, civil society and the media. But how is radicalization determined? And how is it related to the loss of and search for identity? Why do individuals or groups increasingly veer towards extreme political, social or religious ideals?

Two experts will first provide an overview of how radicalization works based on current research findings and personal experience. Participants will then form small groups to discuss how the media can support media consumers in finding a self-confident identity beyond extremism and violence and how to report about biographies of those radicalized without fostering further radicalization. The final plenary discussion will seek to establish what the media can and should do to help prevent radicalization and support de-radicalization.
