Hosted by DW reporter and Rappler sex and gender columnist Ana P. Santos, "Sex & the Body" explores the intricate ways sexuality is woven into Filipino life and culture. Ana takes viewers on a journey through everyday Filipino spaces—churches, mass weddings, bakeries, and even a cafe filled with romance novels—to uncover how Filipinos talk (or don’t talk) about sex, love, and pleasure. From hushed conversations to candid confessions at a maternity clinic, Ana delves into the nuances of Filipino sexuality with curiosity, humor, and a sense of adventure.

Joining Ana is obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Issa Matibag, who breaks down the science behind the body, from anatomy to arousal and everything in between. Together, Ana and Dr. Issa challenge myths and taboos to shine a light on Filipino female sexuality, emphasizing that knowing our bodies is knowing ourselves.

Beth Frondoso, Rappler Head of Multimedia Strategy and Growth: "Sexuality remains a taboo subject in the Philippines. In the global context of the backward slide of gender rights, as well as the persistent disinformation in the country, shows like Sex and the Body are an imperative."

Commitment to Women's Empowerment

Since its launch in 2021, the series has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide. Emphasizing that understanding one's body fosters self-confidence and autonomy, the series has been adapted into multiple languages, meticulously tailored to meet the specific needs of different audiences.

Debarati Guha, DW Director Programs for Asia, expressed her enthusiasm for the series: "DW stands for the empowerment of women. Empowerment must also be about their bodies because women, like all people, are not just mental beings. The 'Sex & the Body' series helps women to better understand their bodies and minds with a lot of humor, warmth, and knowledge. I am delighted that DW has been able to find Rappler as a partner for this."

DW's Distribution Asia team accompanied the project and supported the agreement with Rappler. The original series was produced by DW's Science department and is one of its most successful productions in recent years.
